In Thick-sheet thermoforming In the processing and manufacturing industry, four common types of thermoforming molds are available on the market: plaster molds, electroplated copper molds, and aluminum molds.
1. Plaster molds: The production of so‑called plaster molds involves carving the plaster in a semi‑wet state and then drying it to form the mold. Preparing plaster molds is low‑cost. Due to their low hardness and high plasticity, they are easy to modify. However, a significant drawback is that plaster molds lack sufficient precision, have an uneven surface, are brittle, and are not very durable; therefore, they are often used as patterns for copper electroplating molds or for certain prototype applications.
2. Electroplated copper molds: The production of electroplated copper molds is relatively straightforward. It involves depositing a copper layer onto a plaster mold that has been used to create the initial prototype—this yields an electroplated copper mold. Since its fabrication relies on a plaster mold, the cost of producing the plaster mold is somewhat higher; however, it remains more economical than aluminum molds. Thanks to their smooth, durable surface and low manufacturing cost, electroplated copper molds are among the most widely used types of thermoforming molds.

3. Aluminum molds: We often say that aluminum molds are actually manufactured by machining aluminum ingots using various machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, and CNC equipment. Compared with other types of molds, aluminum molds offer higher precision, a smooth surface finish, and greater durability. Although aluminum molds are superior, they are more expensive; they are typically used for plastic parts that demand the high precision unattainable with copper molds.
Thick-sheet thermoforming The choice of mold is closely tied to the volume of products being thermoformed. Selecting the right mold for thermoforming production requires a comprehensive assessment of factors such as the product design. Of course, among the three types of molds mentioned above, aluminum molds are generally considered to deliver superior precision and quality compared to others; however, they also come at a higher cost.
