As a plastic processing technology, Thick-sheet thermoforming The practical application of thermoforming has become widespread and is now extensively adopted; many plastic products manufactured via thick-sheet thermoforming are produced using this method. Judging by the current level of interest, this trend is likely to persist for a long time. Common raw materials used in thick-sheet thermoforming include HDPE, ABS, and ABS‑TPU. Next, let’s explore how this process is applied in the automotive components industry.

1) HDPE: High-density polyethylene—this material exhibits heat resistance, cold resistance, chemical stability, high rigidity, toughness, and excellent resistance to environmental stress cracking. Main applications include 200-liter water drums, fuel tanks, pallets, automotive components, yachts, blister‑pack tray lids, and specialized packaging for most automotive parts, among others.
2) ABS: Acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene plastic material—exhibits excellent impact resistance, heat resistance, low‑temperature resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical properties. It is easily molded into HDPE‑like shapes, offers stable product dimensions, a high‑gloss surface finish, and superior load‑bearing capacity. However, in terms of low‑temperature performance, toughness, and resistance to environmental stress cracking, HDPE remains advantageous. Main applications: Widely used in the automotive, electronics and electrical, office equipment, and telecommunications sectors. In the packaging industry, it is primarily employed for automated pick‑and‑place operations that demand precise dimensional accuracy.
3) ABS TPU: Thermoplastic polyurethane material—this is a new type of sheet produced by adding a special co-extrusion process to the conventional ABS sheet‑making procedure, resulting in an ABS sheet with a TPU coating on its surface. Products made from this material combine ABS’s excellent mechanical properties with TPU’s superior wear resistance and tear strength. However, the cost of this material is 2–3 times that of standard materials. Due to its higher price, its applications are somewhat limited.
Characteristics of TPU: In practical applications, materials are often subjected to mechanical stresses such as friction, abrasion, and impact, leading to gradual surface wear. Therefore, wear resistance is a critical property. TPU raw material exhibits excellent wear resistance—more than five times that of natural rubber—making it one of the preferred materials for wear‑resistant products. In general, TPU also boasts high tear resistance, with tear strength far superior to that of typical plastics.
Main uses: Thick-sheet thermoforming It is primarily used in automotive interior materials. In the packaging sector, it is mainly employed for parts that require a high level of cleanliness, such as components of powertrain systems like engines and transmissions.
As evidenced by the three material properties discussed above, thick‑sheet thermoformed packaging is highly suitable for packaging a wide range of original equipment manufacturers and component parts in the automotive industry. Below, we will illustrate the applications of thick‑paper thermoformed packaging in the automotive components sector through several case studies and analyses.
Thanks to its technological advantages, an increasing number of companies are adopting thick‑sheet absorption technology to manufacture their products, and this approach has evolved from a niche practice into a mainstream solution. Moreover, with growing public awareness of energy conservation and environmental protection, industries across the board are collaborating, and the use of thick paper‑based absorbent materials is no exception.
Although current technologies still face certain challenges in achieving energy efficiency, high performance, and智能化 (intelligentization) in the production of thick‑walled sheets, ongoing technological advances will eventually overcome these obstacles, enabling truly energy‑efficient, high‑performance, and intelligent manufacturing of such products.
The above outlines the applications of thick‑sheet thermoforming in the automotive components industry. For more information, please feel free to contact us!
